Nile Rodgers Talks New CHIC Album, Premieres Solo Track in Google Hangout: Watch

Days after winning three GRAMMY awards for his guitarwork on Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories," music legend Nile Rodgers stopped by for a Google+ Hangout with Billboard on Wednesday (Feb. 5). While chatting with Billboard's Kerri Mason, the guitar god dropped some news about a new Chic album and shared a never-before-heard new solo track.

Relive the Google+ Hangout in its entirety below:

Rodgers gave an update on the upcoming Chic album, which will feature superstar collaborations from the likes of David Guetta and Avicii. The Chic guitarist described how a lick he played to test a freshly-repaired guitar caught the ear of DJ Nicky Romero, and wound up being an important part of a "huge song" on the new album. "It sounds like a pop record," Rodgers assures.

In other news, Rodgers gave an update on his new solo material (the new, still-in-progress track "Do What You Wanna Do" can be heard 37 minutes into the above video) and announced that a Chic-inspired musical is in the early stages of production.

Daft Punk Returns To Top 10 on Billboard 200

Billboard also asked Rodgers about his once-in-a-lifetime evening at the GRAMMYs, where he picked up his first three trophies, and performed alongside Daft Punk. "The whole thing is still a blur. Traditionally [dance music is] like the redheaded stepchild of pop music," Rodgers says. Not expecting to take home any awards, he mentioned the pleasant surprise he felt finally walking up to the podium, and how his show-stopping performance was what he was really getting excited for.

But that's not all. Rodgers, whose legacy goes back to playing at the legendary Apollo Theatre, had plenty to say on a vast spectrum of topics. What was it like performing with Stevie Wonder at the Grammys? Would he ever work with Madonna again? What about Diana Ross? And what's the word on his collaborations with Disclosure?

Looking back on coming up in dance music, Rodgers reflected: "I knew that I was entering a world where it didn't make any difference if I was young, old, black, white, fat, gay, straight, whatever. It was just about the songs. And that was the one time in America in music that was so revolutionary. I just thought all I had to do was slip my 12-inch to a DJ, make the people dance, and I was in."

Previously, Rodgers dropped some early news about his solo record and the Chic reunion on the GRAMMY red carpet. Check out his interview with Billboard below:

Nile Rodgers brings CHIC to headline Bestival 2014

Disco genius Nile Rodgers will bring Chic to Bestival this year as Sunday’s headliner.

The pop legends will join Beck, Foals and Outkast at the Isle of Wight festival this September, which for 2014 has gone for a ‘Desert Island Disco’ theme.

Rodgers said: “I’m so excited to be back at Bestival, this time in the prestigious Sunday night headliner slot following legends Stevie Wonder and Elton John. Expect an extra special Desert Island Disco set from myself and Chic! Looking forward to seeing you all in September.”

Pony-tailed festival bossman Rob da Bank added: “Ever since I first booked Chic and Nile for Bestival a few years back they have hands down been the best live band we’ve ever had at Bestival and Camp Bestival. And once people start realising how many hits Nile has written and produced for artists ranging from Madonna and David Bowie through to Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ you realise this is just one huge disco jukebox that is gonna keep firing out the hits all night!”

Other acts on the bill this year include Disclosure, Major Lazer, Caribou and this week’s FACT mixers Wild Beasts.

Bestival takes place from September 4-7 on the Isle of Wight – head to the festival’s website for tickets and more information.

Rodgers has maintained his strong form in recent months, racking up collaborations with Disclosure and Tensnake and delivering a must-watch performance at the Grammys with Pharrell, Stevie Wonder and Daft Punk. [via NME]

Nile Rodgers: A Man of Music and Philanthropy

by Xaque Gruber

Fresh from winning three Grammy Awards for his work with Daft Punk on their ubiquitous smash, "Get Lucky," legendary songwriter/musician/producer, Nile Rodgers, chatted about life, art and a new honor: his being selected for ICON MANN's "28 Men of Change," a groundbreaking initiative that shines a light on Black male professional leaders and philanthropists, which airs on BET throughout Black History Month. This places Rodgers in the company of fellow ICON MANN honorees Steve McQueen, Nick Cannon, Forest Whitaker, Swizz Beatz and Lee Daniels.

While everyone loves and respects Rodgers' musical contributions, many may not realize the impressive mark he has made in the philanthropic world with his We Are Family Foundation (WAFF) named for the 1979 Sister Sledge anthem he wrote and produced with his late, beloved partner and CHIC bandmate, Bernard Edwards. WAFF strives to solve some of our biggest problems through global projects that promote peace, and appreciation of cultural diversity.
